Recent findings from McKinsey & Company “Stepping Up Report” suggest that many COOs are struggling with allocating time appropriately: only a third of their time goes to long-term strategic planning, with the remainder split between overseeing people and dealing with current operational priorities.
Other challenges include managing the unique needs of the workforce, an expanding number of shareholders, rapid increases in automation, and workplace real-estate issues.
What COOs will need to succeed in 2024 and beyond

The role of operations is changing. It is more important than ever that those in that role keep up to date with their evolving responsibilities. From automation to the operational and strategic systems being used, operations need to evaluate their own efficiencies.
Operations will need to ensure that employees have access to the tools that they need to comply with the strategies and technologies to break down any interdepartmental barriers. Productivity gains of a satisfied workforce receiving a good experience are worth the time & financial investment.
We’ve identified desired experiences from analysts’ and associations’ perspectives and have included them from an employee, leadership, and management point of view.

The COO role has traditionally taken a backseat to other C-suite functions within the organisation. Its recent resurgence and increasing visibility showcase the importance of the job in building resilience and positioning organisations for success in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
However, the skills of the past aren’t enough. COOs must develop new capabilities and strengths to take on the complex and uncertain tasks that await them. Operational efficiency and productivity pose challenges including:
Get (way) better at anticipating change
Collaborate with other key functions and help shape the agenda
Drive operational excellence culturally and technologically
Manage talent creatively
Engage effectively with boards
From the challenges we’ve created a series of DGAs for you to select from, which support overcoming these challenges in a positive way.
